Sound Healing

Sound Healing

Sound healing is a holistic and ancient therapeutic practice that utilizes the healing power of sound vibrations to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In sound healing, a variety of instruments are used to produce specific frequencies and tones, including singing bowls, tuning forks, gongs, drums, bells, flutes, chimes, and human voice through chanting or toning. Each of these instruments generates unique sounds and vibrations that interact with the body at a cellular level, affecting different energy centers (chakras) and systems.

We offer Sound Healing using Singing Bowls, Gongs and Tingshaws which are rooted in ancient Tibetan and Himalayan traditions.

These bowls, also known as Tibetan singing bowls or Himalayan singing bowls, are crafted from various metals, such as copper, tin, and other alloys. They produce a unique and resonant sound when struck or played with a mallet and the sound produced has healing properties for the mind, body and spirit by virtue of effecting the chakras of the body which respond to these sound frequencies.

The early origins of Tibetan singing bowls date back to around the early periods of 500 BC. They were also popular in the Mesopotamian civilization between 4000 to 6000 BC. Tibetan singing bowls, as obvious from the name, are also an integral part of Tibetan culture and are associated with Buddhist rituals and meditation practices. They are traditionally used by monks for ceremonial and spiritual purposes and also as a tool for cleansing, healing, centering and grounding.

As the name suggests, the key elements of Singing Bowl Therapy are the sounds and vibrations produced by the bowls. When played the bowls emit a rich, harmonic resonance that can be both soothing and invigorating. Different bowl sizes emit different sound frequencies and each frequency can be mapped to stimulate various energy centers in the body, thereby activating, realigning and balancing these energy centers or chakras. Well balanced and activated chakras promote overall physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

The Healing Principles of Sound Healing is based on the principle of resonance. Our bodies and organs have their own vibrational frequencies, and when exposed to the sound of the singing bowls, they can entrain or synchronize with these healing vibrations. This alignment promotes physical and emotional well-being.

Sound Healing Therapy, in various forms and application, benefits users in a wide range of physical, mental and emotional realignment. These benefits extend across management of stress, anxiety, mental and emotional trauma, physical pain relief and depression.

On a more focused level Sound Healing Therapy, is also very effective for relaxation, improved focus and concentration, enhanced creativity, insomnia, emotional release, self-expression, spiritual growth and strengthening over-all self awareness

Book a Session

These sessions are delivered using a video call platform. During an online session, our practitioner will typically set up their singing bowls in a way that allows the viewer to see and hear the bowls clearly – similar to an in-person setting .

A minimum of two sessions are required to get things going.

Session 1

The first day will be a longer session (typically about 90min) as we will take time to discuss specific concerns and problem areas. This helps us understand the root cause of any physical pain, mental or emotional blocks that you may be experiencing. During this conversation, you may share your current state of well-being, including chronic pains, emotional struggle or stress. Once we know what to focus on, we begin the healing session with grounding techniques to help you relax and become present in the moment. This session will be longer (1.5hrs) to ensure we have time to clear any stagnant or heavy energy. Using singing bowls and tingshaws we gently introduce sound vibrations to release tension, clear energetic blockages and address the specific issues we discussed earlier. The vibrations will deeply penetrate your body, releasing any stored trauma or stress. This day is all about setting a foundation for your healing journey, calming your mind and restoring your energy flow.

Session 2

The focus shifts to deep restoration and realignment of your energy. Building on the work done on day 1, we now aim to harmonize your energy and address any remaining imbalances. This session will be slightly shorter (1hr) as we will focus on fine tuning your energy. You will feel deep healing and restoration in areas where tension is still held, including emotional release and pain alleviation promoting mental rejuvenation and clarity. By this day, you will feel a renewed sense of vitality, emotional balance and spiritual alignment with a stronger connection to your inner peace. What is Singing Bowl Therapy

Connection of Chakras and Sound

Our Chakras are the energy centers within the body. There are seven main defined chakras aligned along our spine, from the top of our heads down to the end of the spine. These energy centers and the impact they have on our being has been know for thousands of years.

Chakras are the points where subtle energy channels (nadis) intersect. Energy flows through these channels, nourishing the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of a person’s being.

Each chakra is associated with distinct qualities, functions and attributes related to various aspects of human experience. These include physical health, emotions, communication, intuition and spiritual awareness.

They are also associated with specific colors that represent their energy fields. These colors are known to reflect the vibrational frequency of each chakra.

Being an energy center, Chakras respond most effectively to sound as the vibrational frequencies have been mapped accurately. Each chakra resonates to a specific frequency which stimulates the energy flow, thereby activating the chakra and creating a balanced and aligned flow.

Singing Bowl Therapy connects the use of specific sounds and frequencies to resonate with those of the chakras and the process allows for clearing, activating and maintain a well aligned energy system in the body.

The expertise, instinct and intuitiveness of the practitioner in this modality is of prime importance as the first step in the modality is the scanning and reading of the energy centers which then define the further course of action

Chakras and their Frequencies

Crown Chakra (Sahastrar) : Located at the top of the head, the crown chakra represents our connection to higher consciousness and spiritual awareness. The sound “Aum” is used for this chakra which resonates at a frequency of 963Hz

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) : Situated in the forehead between our eyebrows, the third eye chakra is associated with intuition and spiritual insight. The sound “Om” is used for this chakra which resonates at a frequency of 144Hz

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) : Located in the throat area, the throat chakra is connected to communication and self-expression. The sound “Ham” resonates with this chakra which resonates at a frequency of 741Hz.

Heart Chakra (Anahata) : Located at the center of our chest, the heart chakra is associated with love, compassion, and connection. The sound “Yam” is used for the heart chakra which resonates at a frequency of 639Hz.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) : Situated in the upper abdomen, the solar plexus chakra is linked to personal power and confidence. The sound “Ram” is used for this chakra which resonates at a frequency of 528Hz.

Sacral Chakra (Swadhisthan) : Found in the lower abdomen, the sacral chakra is connected to creativity, emotions, and sensuality. The sound “Vam” is associated with this chakra which resonates at a frequency of 417Hz.

Root Chakra (Muladhar) : Located at the base of our spine, the root chakra is associated with grounding, stability, and survival. The sound “Lam” is used in for this chakra which resonates at a frequency of 396Hz.

Resonance in Singing Bowl Therapy

Resonance is the core fundamental concept in this modality as it plays a central role in the therapeutic effects and experiences associated with singing bowls.

Vibrational Matching :  As we know resonance is the phenomenon where one vibrating object can cause another object to vibrate at the same frequency. In singing bowl therapy, the resonant sound produced by the bowls is used to synchronize the body’s own vibrations and energy centers (chakras) with the frequency of the bowl’s sound. This synchronization is used to promote harmony and balance within the body and mind. (Sound Bath – Read More)

Stimulation of Energy Centers :  Singing bowls are placed on or near specific energy centers (chakras) of the body. When the bowls are played, their resonant vibrations stimulate and activate these energy centers. Each chakra is associated with different physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects. The resonance of the bowls clears blockages and restores balance to these centers.

Relaxation and Stress Reduction : The soothing and harmonious sound produced by singing bowls is known to induce a deep state of relaxation. This relaxation response is due to the resonance of the bowls, which has a calming effect on the nervous system as a whole. As the body and mind relax, stress and tension are reduced, leading to a sense of tranquility and well-being.

Physical and Emotional Release : Resonance helps release physical and emotional tension stored in the body. The vibrations of the bowls penetrate deeply into tissues and organs, promoting relaxation of muscles and the release of pent-up emotions and stress.

Enhanced Meditation and Mindfulness : Resonance from singing bowls is also used in meditation practices. The sound serves as a focal point for meditation, helping individuals achieve a deeper state of mindfulness and concentration. The calming and resonant quality of the bowls can make it easier for practitioners to enter a meditative state and experience inner peace. (READ MORE ATTMH)

Healing : Resonance promotes the body’s natural healing processes by aligning and balancing the body’s energy and vibrational frequencies (Chakras). Singing bowl therapy enhances physical, mental and emotional healing and aids in the recovery from illness and promotes overall well-being.

Spiritual Connection : Resonance is also associated with the spiritual aspects of singing bowl therapy. Users experience a sense of spiritual connection, transcendence, or oneness with the universe when experiencing the resonant vibrations of the bowls. This contributes to a profound and transformative spiritual experience.
In essence, resonance is at the heart of singing bowl therapy, as it creates the conditions for physical, emotional, mental and spiritual healing and transformation.

The Science of Singing bowls

Emotion is a multimodal entity. It can be recognized by analyzing brain and speech signals generated by emotions.

Scientific studies have proven the existence of clearly recognisable electromagnetic brainwaves which are connected to varying states of consciousness. Brain waves are oscillating electrical voltages in the brain measuring just a few millionths of a volt and form the Technological Basics of EEG Recording (RMS EEG 32-channel electroencephalography (EEG)) machine which is commonly used in medical and research applications)

The five main frequencies and their recorded characteristics are as below:

Frequency bandFrequencyBrain states
Gamma (γ)> 35 HzConcentration, Problem Solving
Beta (β)12–35 HzAnxiety dominant, active, external attention, Busy, Active Mind
Alpha (α)8–12 HzVery relaxed, passive attention
Theta (θ)4–8 HzDeeply relaxed, inward focused, Drowsy
Delta (δ)0.5–4 HzSleep, Deep Sleep
Brainwave Frequency Bands

Gamma (γ) > 35 Hz Concentration, Problem Solving
Beta (β) 12–35 Hz Anxiety dominant, active, external attention, Busy, Active Mind
Alpha (α) 8–12 Hz Very relaxed, passive attention
Theta (θ) 4–8 Hz Deeply relaxed, inward focused, Drowsy
Delta (δ) 0.5–4 Hz Sleep, Deep Sleep

Brain waves are propagated along the perineural system and blend with this continuous current. The result is a powerful vector of homeostasis (Self Regulating process).

This balancing force is a key element in tissue repair, and probably in all internal recovery processes. A patient’s positive attitude is indispensable to healing. The brain waves he or she generates extend through the perineural system as far as the injured part of the body, wherever this might be. This is one of the physiological justifications for the placebo effect.

Our brain in its normal state, i.e. in everyday conscience, produces beta waves while Alpha waves are present in the states of meditation and calm.

Theta waves are typical for the state of slumber and drowsiness, whereas delta waves are present only during deep sleep.

When the waves produced by singing bowls were recorded, scientists discovered wave patterns which were the same as the alpha waves produced by our brain. These have the ability to reconfigure our brain frequency and thereby impact the overall mind and body frequency and brain rhythms. The ability to match and synchronize these frequencies have a direct impact on how a person feels and subsequent cumulative benefits.

Things to Consider

Singing Bowl therapy is completely safe and non-invasive as a practice and most people do not experience any negative side effects. However, as with any holistic therapy, individual experiences can vary.

Here are a few considerations :

  1. Sensitivity to Sound : Some individuals may be sensitive to loud or resonant sounds. If you have heightened sensitivity to sound or certain frequencies, you might find the sounds of the singing bowls uncomfortable. It’s a good idea to communicate your preferences and concerns if any with our practitioner before starting a session.

  2. Overstimulation : While Singing Bowl therapy aims to promote relaxation and stress reduction, in rare cases, some individuals might find the experience over-stimulating. If you have a history of sensory sensitivities, anxiety disorders, or other conditions it is advisable to share these details with the practitioner so that the sessions can be tailored as per your thresholds.

  3. Emotional Release : Some users may experience unexpected emotional responses during or after a Singing Bowl Therapy session. This could include feelings of sadness, anxiety, or even a sense of euphoria. These emotional releases are not necessarily harmful, but it’s important to process them in a healthy and supportive way.
